China Can Never Be India’s Friend. Here’s Why

Masood Azhar

Well it was not a surprise for India when China once again, for the fourth time came in between of listing Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. It was not  something that only India wanted, in fact USA and other nations also wanted to list the mastermind of Pathankot attack as a global terrorist but China argued that “there is no consensus” among the members of sanctions committee.

Masood Azhar

This was New Delhi’s reaction, “Deeply disappointed that once again a single country blocked international consensus on the designation of an acknowledged terrorist Masood Azhar. India strongly believes that double standards will only undermine international community’s resolve to combat terrorism. India hopes there will be realisation that accommodating with terrorism for narrow objectives is short-sighted and counterproductive.”

Last year, it was China only in the 15-nation UN Security Council which blocked India’s application despite the fact that all the other countries were in support of India and wanted to place Masood Azhar on the 1267 sanctions list. If Masood is placed on this list than his assets will get freeze and a ban will be imposed on his travelling.

However, even after taking such a disgraceful step, China has suggested that it is, “ready to work with India to promote constant progress of bilateral relations guided by this diplomacy with Chinese characteristics for the new era.” China has tried to portray as if it has always worked towards improving the bilateral ties and for the past few years, it has made attempts to develop a relation based on mutual trust and cooperation.

China’s behaviour in the BRICS 2017 at Xiamen, China was quite shocking as along with the other four nations, it also took a strong stand against terrorism and 43-page BRICS declaration was issued which talked about the safety concerns and the violence which has been caused by ISIS, Taliban, Al Qaeda and it’s associates such as Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Haqqani Network, Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT), Jaish e-Mohammad (JeM), Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP),  Hizbut-Tahrir and Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement.

This was shocking for all those who have been following China’s policies for long now as till last year China was not in the mood to talk about terror groups based in Pakistan such as LeT and JeM. One more fact that was quite shocking that this year’s BRICS was held under the clouds of tension between India and China due to Doklam stand-off and when China was expected to show more dissent, it went with the flow and spoke against terrorism. While at 2016 Goa summit of BRICS, China did whatever was in its capacity to stop India from making terrorism a priority issue.

Geng Shuang, the foreign ministry spokesperson of China said this to justify his nation’s stance, “BRICS countries have shown their concerns to the violent activities raised by these organisations… These organisations are all sanctioned by the UN Security Council and have a significant impact on Afghanistan issue.”

For Pakistan it was a rude shock and its external affairs minister, Khawaja Asif said, “We (Pakistan) need to break our false image. We have no stake but there is baggage. We need to accept the history and correct ourselves.” He also made it clear that Pakistan needs, “to tell our friends that we have improved our house. We need to bring our house in order to prevent facing embarrassment on an international level.”

Despite the fact that India diplomacy made China to gave its support on terrorism, the reality is that nothing has changed on ground when it comes to Sino-Pak or Sino-India ties and this was clearly visible when Sun Weidong, the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan said, “the BRICS declaration mentioned organisations which are already banned.”

Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi assured his Pakistani counterpart that, “there has been no change in Chinese policy regarding Pakistan… Pakistan and China are in constant contact regarding regional challenges”.

In fact both the nations are standing against the new Afghanistan policy of Trump Administration. Wang supported Pakistan when he said, “When it comes to the issue of counterterrorism, we believe Pakistan has done its best with a clear conscience. In comparison, some countries need to give Pakistan the full credit it deserves.”

There is no doubt that for China, Pakistan is a puppet which it is using against India and there is going to be no change in its perspective in the future as well and this calls for India to be more alert and active towards its interests.
