In the 21st century where the world is said to be a global village, and information, news is shared from any part of the world, North Korea is yet even today an exception. And no matter what ever you tell about social media, it continues to remain as a global microphone for journalists like Yeonmi Park in order to share their stories. Yeonmi escaped from North Korea along with her mother when she was 13 years old. And today she has become one of the women spokesperson for North Korea by escaping from an unimaginable country.
Yeonmi spoke at the One Young World Summit two years ago, and it is now when more than 65 million people have heard her stories. Yeonmi heart wrenching and a truly personal speech given at the summit had brought the attendees in tears. Her video was recently shared on the social networking sites, and say that in less than a week it was watched by more than 65 million people around the world.
While you have a watch at the video it will show you why.
Her entire speech in the summit will take you through the hell that she has gone through being in North Korea. And how that entire country has been terrorised. She also brings out some of the scary moments during the time when she was living in North Korea, where her friend’s mother was publically being executed just because she was watching a Hollywood movie.
North Korea is the only country in the world where people are executed for making international calls, watching movies, news etc. She was born in 1993 and had been abducted by birth. Her father died while they were in china and had escaped from North Korea. She also said how she got her father buried secretly at 3.am when she was just 14 years old. She could not even cry as she feared of being sent back to North Korea.
Yeonmi also said that the day they escaped from North Korea, her mother was raped, and the rapist turned out to be a Chinese broker. He then targeted her when she was just 13 years old. There is a saying in a country like North Korea, “Women are really very weak but mothers are strong. My mother allowed herself to be raped so that I am safe and not harmed by them.
The scariest part of her speech is when she tried to escape. Mongolia is our freedom of movement. Death or Dignity, armed with knives we were all set to kill ourselves the day we get to know we are going to be sent back to North Korea. No humans actually have the rights of being oppressed just because it’s their birth place.
